The power of bearing witness

Your health is a result of your desire to see your brother with no blood upon his hands, nor guilt upon his heart made heavy with the proof of sin. And what you wish is given you to see ( A Course in Miracles, t-27.II.7)

When you suffer in any way, you are saying that your brother attacked you. He took something from you, or made you the victim of something he did. You suffer because of him. This is called projection. It is an intense feeling of guilt which is unbearable to our mind, and therefore we try to get rid of it by projecting it unto others. This projection makes your idea of being a victim suffering under the consequences of others.

It also makes your body sick because you use your body as evidence that you have been attacked. A broken body is an accuser of your brothers guilt and it claims that you have been unfairly treated, that you are a victim. You bear witness of his guilt with your suffering.

The root of all your suffering, both physical sickness and mental conditions is this projection of guilt. And the sickness, or your mental state, becomes the witness of your brothers attack on you. Your suffering is the “proof” of your brothers guilt and of your innocence.

But innocence and attack cannot coexist, and there is no real innocence in projection. And there is no healing in attacking your brother. It only builds more guilt in both of you, and thereby reinforcing the need for projection.

Your suffering is your proof of your brothers guilt. By your projection you make sickness real to your self and to your brother. You believe that something outside of you is the cause of your suffering. You believe that you are the victim and that someone else is guilty of your suffering. You believe that the cause of your suffering came from something outside of you.

When you finally realize that all cause is in your mind, then it also becomes clear to you that your brother is innocent. The world never did anything to you, and the things you believe your brothers did to you was all your own doing. You did it to yourself. Any suffering you experience is your own projection of guilt.

When you realize this, and you start living the consequences of it, healing occurs. Now you no longer wish to attest to your brothers guilt, now you wish to attest to his innocence. And with this wish you change the purpose of the body which now becomes a tool to show your brother that you are healed, that what he thought he did had no consequences. With your witness of his innocence his healing occurs and he is free. With his healing he sets you free and your healing is confirmed. You now join in salvation instead of hell, and you both now attest to truth.

What you use the body for it will become to you. Use it for sin or attack, which is the same as sin, and you will see it as sinful. Because it is sinful it is weak, and being weak, it suffers and it dies. Use it to bring the word of God to those who have it not, and the body becomes holy. Because it is holy it cannot be sick, nor can it die. (A Course in Miracles, m-12.5).
